Minimize the use of your furnace with this efficient heat source. A hybrid system can reduce costs associated with fuel-only heating sources.
Heating and cooling with geothermal has proven to be the most efficient and sustainable method of climate control for both home and commercial application
Boilers heat water, and provide either hot water or steam for heating. Steam is distributed via pipes to steam radiators, and hot water can be distributed via baseboard radiators or radiant floor systems.
Smart thermostats have become one of the most popular choices for home energy savings and owner convenience.
Your furnace isn’t just the source of heating for your home; it’s also the driver behind cooling and year round air quality . That’s why furnace maintenance is important year round.
If you're researching furnace installation, furnace replacement, or furnace service, here are a few things you'll want to know.
Know your efficiency
AFUE is an efficiency rating that stands for “annual fuel utilization efficiency.” It is a ratio of useful energy output to energy input, expressed as a percentage. So basically, the high the AFUE percentage the better the efficiency. A simple way to think of it like grades in school 99% is an A+, 85% is a solid B, and so on…
Know your options
Multi stage and modulating furnaces can operate at exactly the output you need in order to maintain comfort.
Think of it like this: If your thermostat needs to raise the temperature in the house by 2°; a single stage furnace would kick on at full-bore and most likely overshoot that goal. A multi stage or modulating furnace on the other hand would use a low setting on the gas burner and the fan speed to hit your perfect comfort point without you even noticing.
Potential Fuel Sources
- Natural gas is most common urban residential areas
- Propane is typically used rurally though other fuel oils are an option
- Electric furnaces are not uncommon in warmer climates and in small heating applications
- Hybrid or green source heat is an increasingly common option. This is a situation where a majority of heat would be created by a geothermal or air source heat-pump rather than by burning fuel.
Boilers create radiant heat. That is to say, heat which radiates from a warmed surface as opposed to being distributed with a “forced air” blower or fan. This process is sometimes called “Hydronic Heating” because it uses water as a heat transfer medium.
If you're researching boiler installation, boiler replacement, or boiler service, here are a few things you'll want to know.
Hydronc heating uses water instead of forced air to transfer heat. The result is even heating and quiet performance. If your home or business uses radiators then your heat is coming from a boiler.
Radiant Floor Heating
Radiant floor heating circulates warm water through tubing under your floors. The result is very comfortable, clean and hassle-free. There are also all electric options available for in-floor heat.
Geothermal and Air Source Heat Pumps
Heat pumps work much like an AC or a refrigerator with on big difference; they also work in reverse. Ever feel the hot air coming from the back of your refrigerator? That is heat that’s been removed from the inside. If you reverse that process, suddenly you got a highly efficient heat source.
Air Source Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps operate just like our example of the above to cool in the summer and help heat in the winter.
Geothermal works essentially the same as an air source heat pump with one major exception. A geothermal heat pumps take advantage of relatively warm ground temperatures in the winter and relatively cool ground temperatures in the summer. This makes Geothermal the most energy efficient heating and cooling option available.
